Pilates Helps Back Pain

Does your back pain stop you from doing the things you love to do? Does it interfere with playing with your kids or grandkids? Does it cause you to cancel your tennis or golf matches? Is it so bad that some days you can’t stop popping ibuprofen?  

A study from the NIH concluded that “In patients with chronic low back pain, Pilates showed significant improvement in pain relief and functional enhancement”. 

Pilates is one of the most effective exercise treatments for back pain because it:

✔️ helps lengthen your spine which creates space between the vertebral discs, relieving pressure

✔️ it strengthens the core, a corset-like group of muscles that stabilize the trunk and pelvis.

✔️ it makes you more aware of your body mechanics allowing you to be cognizant of how you’re sitting and standing throughout the day

✔️ it helps to align and stabilize the pelvis and legs, thereby lessening the strain on the back muscles

✔️ it emphasize the “neutral spine,” an ideal posture that respects the natural, healthy curves of the lower, mid and upper back.

While you may be tempted to sit on the sidelines because of back pain, lack of activity becomes a vicious cycle, compounding the problem. Sometimes movement is the medicine you need to feel better.
