The Surprising Key to Longevity
Believe it or not, but the strength of our relationships is one of the key factors of determining our longevity. Our social relationships and social networks may be more important than our genetics, diet or even exercise in determining our health outcomes.
A study conducted out of Roseto, Pennsylvania gained attention in the 1950s. The study, known as the Roseto Effect, aimed to investigate the surprisingly low rate of heart disease among the residents of Roseto compared to the neighboring communities.
The study found that despite having similar lifestyles and risk factors for heart disease, the close-knit community of Roseto exhibited remarkably low rates of heart problems. Researchers attributed this phenomenon to various factors such as strong family ties, social support, cultural values, and a strong community. This was one of the first studies that really highlighted the potential influence of community and social outcomes on our longevity.
Another popular study conducted over the span of 80 years, The Harvard Study of Adult Development, wanted to find out what makes people thrive, not what makes them sick. They tracked the same people over many generations asking thousands of questions to find out what makes people healthy and happy. These people gave regular updates on their life, their marital status, their income and were part of interviews where they talked about their fears, life satisfaction and more. Through all of this data, researchers found that it wasn’t career achievement, it wasn’t exercise, it wasn’t a healthy diet that determined the quality and happiness of your life, rather it was good relationships…the power of a community.
