Scolio-Pilates is an evidence-based program to help you manage your scoliosis using a holistic full-body approach to alignment and strengthening. Learn more about Scolio-Pilates here.
Scolio-Pilates is a Pilates-based exercise program that uses spinal elongation, breathing, alignment correction, and muscle strengthening for the management of scoliosis. This program is appropriate for individuals at any stage of scoliosis, including:
Cleared pre- and post-op patients
Patients undergoing bracing treatment
Individuals “watching and waiting” for changes before seeking medical treatment
Individuals living with scoliosis for many years
Scolio-Pilates addresses several scoliosis-related symptoms, including postural imbalance, pain, reduced strength and breathing difficulties.
Emily will develop a personalized program to manage your scoliosis using a variety of methods:
Lengthening your spine towards neutral so you look and feel taller
Breathing techniques to open up areas of your ribs and lungs that may be constrained
Strengthening exercises to help you maintain this new alignment
Use of props, called wedges, to ease stiffness and promote balanced alignment during exercise
Emily will conduct an initial assessment with you to develop an understanding of your curve type and personal goals. Using this information, Emily will recommend a plan, which will include a combination of private sessions in the studio and home exercises. You will also learn how to apply the Scolio-Pilates principles to any of our group Pilates classes for optimal benefit.
While Pilates may not cure or fix scoliosis, it will certainly improve posture, elongate the spine, and uniformly develop muscle and connective tissue.
We know scoliosis can range from a little discomfort to debilitating. Your goals are our goals, and your wins are our wins, so let us be a part of your scoliosis journey so you can move better in your daily life.
